Newnham Archery Club

Founded in 2014, Newnham Archery Club is the Forest Of Dean's newest archery club The Forest Of Dean has had a long association with the art of Archery. In the middle ages, Forest miners were sought after archers as their physical strength, gained from working 10 hours a day or more swinging picks and shovelling large quantities of rock meant they could easily handle a powerful longbow.

Laws passed in medieval times demanded all men and boys between the ages of 7 to 60 must practice archery on Sundays, as well as during festivals and holidays. Some Forest of Dean villages still have open areas of land known as ‘The Butts’, where these Sunday archery practice sessions took place.
